PERCEIVED INFLUENCE OF PEER GROUP ON STUDENTS’ ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT IN CHEMISTRY

Abstract

This study investigated on perceived influence of peer group on students’ academic achievement in Chemistry in Awka education zone in Anambra state. The study adopted a descriptive survey design. Three research questions guided the study. The population of the study were all S S 2 and 3 secondary school Chemistry students in the zone. The sample of the study was 500 Chemistry students randomly selected from the sample schools from the zone. The instrument for data collection was named Peer Groups Influence Achievement Test Questionnaire (PGIATQ) containing 19 items spread over three clusters A, B, and C adapted from Filade et. al. (2019) peer group questionnaire. The reliability of the instrument was tested using Cronbach alpha technique and value obtained was .70 indicating that the instrument was reliable. Data obtained were analysed using mean to answer all the three research questions. From the findings conclusions and recommendations were made.
